Toru Cafe sits quietly on Karasuma Street, offering a relaxed start to the day in Kyoto’s Shimogyo Ward. This small coffee spot draws a steady flow of locals who appreciate straightforward, well-made breakfasts without the fuss. The atmosphere is unpretentious and cozy, with a distinctly vintage charm highlighted by old-fashioned decorations and a notable world map centered on Japan that feels like a nod to travel and discovery.

The heart of Toru Cafe’s appeal is its bread—soft, fresh, and reminiscent of simple, familiar comforts. Sandwiches and toasts are the morning staples here, with options like カスクートサンドモーニング (morning crusty sandwiches) and the blte standing out as easy, satisfying choices. The coffee serves as a fitting accompaniment, with the espresso and specialty drinks like the coffee float and Viennese-style sausage coffee balancing mild sweetness and robust flavor. It’s the kind of place where coffee feels thoughtfully brewed rather than overcomplicated.

The vibe is gentle and low-key, partly influenced by a carefully curated playlist that often includes The Beatles and other mellow tunes, setting a quiet but upbeat soundtrack for early hours. It’s clear that the owners—a welcoming couple—help cultivate this inviting mood, making it a spot that encourages lingering over a light breakfast or a slow coffee.

Families, travelers beginning their Kyoto mornings, and locals popping in for a convenient and affordable bite all find something to like here. The soft-spoken music and comfortable pace make it especially good for those who prefer breakfast without noise or rush. Mornings and early afternoons are ideal times to visit, when natural light enhances the warm, vintage décor and the cafe hums with gentle activity.

Overall, Toru Cafe is a place for quiet enjoyment of simple, fresh flavors with a side of friendly hospitality—all tucked into a modest corner of Kyoto’s city rhythm.

Super delicious bread choice, reminded me of Brazilian's "French bread". Hosts were kind and amicable. The space is filled with memories and vintage gadgets and a very cool Word map with japan in the center.

Nice breakfast place which opens early. Please check the opening hours before coming. Simple looking breakfast but the bread was really well toasted on the outside and soft on the inside. English menu is available as well. Cash payment only. My favourite is the mixed sandwich set. Surprised that there was a tinge of wasabi when I bite the sandwich. Would definitely recommend this as I feel that it’s value for money.

Calming jazz music, couple running this cafe. Light toasted and soft bread, delicious salad, great coffee. No kids, almost no people. Very calm, tasty and relaxing. The prices are low
